May 8, 2006Hard work has its own rewards but Fiducial’s Gene Polley had an extra reason to smile when the senior business advisor won a client referral contest during tax season which entitled his family to enjoy a four-day, three-night getaway at the L’Auberge Del Mar Resort & Spa.
Located in San Diego North's coastal village of Del Mar, the luxury hotel is considered a premiere travel destination offering casual elegance, gourmet dining, spa pampering, world-class golf and tennis.
Throughout tax season, Polley put in many 12-hour days but the end result was worth it.
By winning a client referral contest during tax season, Fiducial senior business advisor Gene Polley and his family enjoyed a four-day, three-night getaway at the L’Auberge Del Mar Resort & Spa, located in San Diego North’s coastal village of Del Mar. |
“I was pursuing new business clients well into March on a pretty heavy duty schedule and going out on multiple appointments,” said Polley who works out of Fiducial’s San Diego, CA, office. “I was working hard on getting new clients and this was the payoff for doing it.”
After checking into the hotel, Polley and his wife, Diane Strum, did some “touristy” type of things such as shopping in Del Mar which has a number of small boutiques along the main route. While shopping, he couldn’t resist combining business with pleasure as he began talking with the shop owners and offering them subscriptions to the Fiducial Small Business Update newsletter. The excursion also gave his wife a chance to watch him operate in his sales mode.
“She said ‘you really do a good job, you’re not too salesy, not pushy, you’re friendly, offer advice and talk about point of sale systems,’ ” he said. “She was pretty impressed.”
Let’s make a deal
Polley’s seven-year-old son, Aaron, had to go to school on Friday but when he finally got to the hotel he was keenly interested in ordering room service.
“He ordered pasta and burgers,” Polley said. “He loves room service.”
On Saturday morning, Aaron headed for the beach which is just a block away and went boogie boarding in a wetsuit for two and a half hours while his dad stood and watched in the surf.
Though this was supposed to be a relaxing weekend, Aaron kept his parents on the go. Polley served as a bench coach for Aaron’s baseball team in the afternoon but by the evening, he was ready to make a deal with the energetic youngster.
“We told him he could order room service while we went across the street to a restaurant and we were able to have a really nice dinner,” he said. “We gave him one of the cell phones, he called us four times and then asked us to bring him dessert.”
